Scott and Vicki's Wedding Playlist - 3rd September 2011

It's been a long time since my last post on here and that's largely due to the birth of my son last NYE...been a touch busy since then! This little update to the blog is a playlist that I used to mix from at a friend's wedding at the weekend. I've decided to post it as a number of people asked about particular songs that I played at various points and I'd be unsure as this list did chop and change slightly throughout. I didn't quite reach the end but I had a great time experimenting with a number of styles of music that I'd not properly mixed before, a great time at the wedding and reception, and I hope those listening enjoyed it, too. It seemed to go down well!

Congratulations to Vicki and Scott and may they have a long and happy life together with their beautiful daughter, Esme.

Logan D - November 2010 Mix for Urban Agency

A very heavy mix right here. Jump-up all the way and Logan D, son of the legend that is Mickey Finn, gets to work very quickly...smashing tune after tune into an excellent hour-long mix. Label owner (Low Down Deep Recordings, home to the tunes of Pleasure, Majistrate, Zen, Mutated Forms and many more), promoter, DJ and producer - things are busy for Logan.

No tracklist but get set for a mix of some very fresh dubs, along with a few that have been doing the rounds for a while, although in some cases are still yet to surface to you and me. Enjoy...download available here.

Massive Attack - Live at Megasport Palace, Moscow - 24th September 2010

I'm waiting patiently for Massive Attack to tour again and perform at the Royal Albert Hall or O2. They're one of my favourite groups and have been for some time but it was actually '100th Window' that made me sit up and listen. For some reason, probably the hardcore/jungle/dnb that was immersed in at the time, I didn't listen to 'Blue Lines', 'Protection', 'No Protection' or 'Mezzanine' until well after they were released.

At the end of the day, they are one of Britain's best musical exports and are renowned for their deep brooding melodic tracks like 'Future Proof' as they are for more up-tempo tracks like the huge 'Unfinished Sympathy'. The irony is that I bought '100th Window' while working in Moscow and have listened to it regularly ever since. This set is an excellent example of their work, although the quality isn't brilliant - but still definitely listenable. Thanks to the Panty Inspector for the links. Download and enjoy! Tracklist in the comments.

Furney, dRamatic & dbAudio - ATM Radio 29th August 2010

Furney has been steadily building his reputation over the past few years, with LTJ Bukem picking up a number of his tunes ('Drum Tools' featuring MC Conrad, for example), with forthcoming releases on Good Looking and several appearing on Bukem's Fabrix Live 46 mix. His style fits right in with Bukem's labels, but he's reaching a wide audience, while remixes of tunes such as Foul Play's 'Being With You' have done nothing but increase his exposure and publicity. Total Science's Advanced and CIA imprints released a couple of pieces back in 2007, and Furney then popped up with two big remixes...the classic 'Airtight' and the vocal roller 'Never Had a Dream'. This tight little mix for Nookie's Atmosphere night at the end of August is a real beauty and a great example of his style of production. MC Five Alive compliments things just nicely on the mic...oh, and how good is 'Doobo Delaniv'? Bass!

The profile of dRamatic & dbAudio is similarly rising. DJs such as Grooverider, Fabio, LTJ Bukem, Big Bud, Marky and Doc Scott are championing the sounds of this duo from Nottingham...it's not hard to see why. Check their SoundCloud page for audio previews of their tracks, or just check out this mix for a 75-minute selection which includes many of their tracks. Tracklistings for both mixes are in the comments. Enjoy...and respect to Phuzion Records and Breaksblog.

Mr Scruff - DJ Set from Ninja XX; 2nd October 2010

Mr Scruff has been very busy over the past few weeks, with DJ sets all over the UK...and not ordinary sets, of course - 6-hour ones! He was one of the first names on the list to play at the Ninja Tune 20th anniversary event 'XX' (see earlier post on this event) and his 2-hour set is available for a limited time to download via his site. Click on the 'download code' link and enter the code 'Nt20fR', then follow the instructions. Thanks, Mr Scruff! Otherwise a mirror link is available here...thanks to jmzmaloney at dnbforum.com for the link. A preview of the set can be listened to below and tracklisting is in the comments. Enjoy!

Rockwell - Shogun Audio; Ministry of Sound Radio - 11th October 2010

Rockwell is a DJ and producer who champions the minimal sound of dnb. Although his mixes feature a wide array of tunes, old and new, his own productions are clean, crisp and often with one foot in the 'glitch' category. His debut release, 'Underpass', was on the 'Critical Sound' LP, swiftly followed by releases on Critical (the 'Noir' EP), Digital Soundboy (the 'Stowaway' EP), and then - following his signing to Shogun Audio - 'Full Circle' b/w 'My War'. 'DJ Friendly Unit Shifter' is next up on Shogun, b/w 'Fakin' Jacks'.

Fans of Commix, Alix Perez, D-Bridge, Instra:mental, Skream, Icicle, Switch, Sabre, Nymfo and Proxima will be well into his beats. There are two mixes linked here for your pleasure - the first is a mix he did for K Mag (Knowledge to the older heads!), while the second is his recent appearance on Ministry of Sound Radio, representing Shogun Audio. Have a listen...this is a different tip as we head into winter, but there's still warmth under the surface. Tracklist in the comments, as always.

PS - he looks nothing like the 'baddie' in Terminator 2.

DJ Marky - Live at Pitch Club, Porto, Portugal - 4th October 2010 (3-hour set!)

DJ Marky has been smashing up dancefloors worldwide for the past decade or so with his tight and varied drum n bass sets. I remember the first mix of his that I heard was a free Knowledge magazine cover CD back in 1999 (check it if you haven't already). I'd never heard of him prior to that but it was shortly after this that 'The Brazilian Job' was released in line with the success of his sets at Movement, London, while his remixes on 'The Brasil EP' and of the worldwide hit 'LK' further cemented his place on the drum n bass scene.

Since then he has set up his own label, Innerground, worked with a whole host of artists - most notably Makoto, XRS, Bungle, Total Science and Zinc - and is one of the premier DJs to see at any club. This set, only recorded a few days ago and which was broadcast on Red Bull Academy Radio, is a three-hour blast through his crates. His scratching is something that many of his fans enjoy, but the wide array of tunes from various sub-genres within dnb give him a wide appeal.

So, enjoy this recording...the sound quality is excellent - apart from the odd jingle here and there which you can't do much about. Oh, be sure to check out these videos of his scratching - including some insane, upside-down deck business!
